Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly reacted to an incident that occurred during President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to West Bengal. The issue came up after the venue of the International Santali Conference in North Bengal was changed and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not attend the event. Modi said such actions were disappointing and against democratic values, adding that they hurt the feelings of tribal communities across the country.
In a post on the social media platform X, Modi called the incident shameful and said such a situation had never happened before. He accused the West Bengal government and the TMC administration of crossing all limits and said the government machinery should take responsibility for the disrespect shown to the President. According to him, this event has saddened people who believe in democracy and respect for tribal communities.
Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu also expressed concern over the developments. She had travelled to Siliguri to attend the international tribal conference. As per protocol, the Chief Minister, ministers or senior officials were expected to welcome the President, but no one from the state government came to receive her. Permission for the originally planned venue was also not given due to security reasons. However, Murmu said she holds no personal anger towards the Bengal government and described Mamata Banerjee as being like a sister to her. She also reminded that she considers herself a daughter of Bengal.
