A heated war of words erupted in the Lok Sabha between leaders of the NDA alliance and opposition parties including Congress. Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav demanded a sub-quota within the Women’s Reservation Bill, including provisions for Muslims. Opposition parties raised objections to the bills, stating they were not against women’s reservation but questioned the urgency and lack of detailed discussion.
Responding strongly, Union Home Minister Amit Shah questioned why objections were being raised even before the full introduction of the bill, assuring that all concerns would be addressed during the debate. He rejected religion-based reservations and confirmed that the census process has begun. Speaker Om Birla approved a division vote, where 207 MPs supported and 126 opposed allowing discussion on the bills. Several opposition parties, including Congress, SP, TMC, DMK, and others, voted against the proposals.
