In a fascinating turn in Telugu state politics, two powerful women — Kavitha, daughter of K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), and Sharmila, daughter of Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR) — now stand on their own, carving independent paths after parting ways with their politically dominant brothers, K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) and Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy (Jagan).
Both leaders are rewriting their political journeys in contrasting styles. While Sharmila has taken shelter under the Congress Party, Kavitha, expelled from the BRS, is reportedly preparing to launch her own party and rebuild her influence across Telangana.
At present, Kavitha seems miles ahead in terms of ground activity and visibility. She’s touring Telangana extensively, addressing public grievances, and shaping her image as a mass leader beyond BRS boundaries. With the next elections still three years away, she’s working early to strengthen her grassroots connection.
Meanwhile, Sharmila, despite having Congress’s backing, is yet to find her rhythm. Since the 2024 elections, her public engagements have been few. Her last major appearance came during the Montha Cyclone, where she visited affected areas four days after the disaster, following a brief media meet.
With Jagan’s political momentum slowing down and his long stays in Bengaluru, Sharmila has a golden chance to step into the opposition space and become the voice of the people in Andhra Pradesh.
If she intensifies her ground presence now, Sharmila can rewrite her political story just as Kavitha is currently doing in Telangana. As it stands, one is sprinting — and the other is yet to pick up pace.
