Former minister Ambati Rambabu once again courted controversy after a heated confrontation with police personnel during a rally following his release from Rajamahendravaram Central Jail. After securing bail in a case related to alleged collection of money from pensioners and distribution of lottery tickets during Sankranti celebrations in Sattenapalli, Rambabu was released on Wednesday and stayed overnight at a supporter’s residence in Rajamahendravaram. On Thursday morning, he attempted to travel to his residence in Guntur in a large convoy of cars and bikes. Police, citing Section 30 restrictions, issued notices advising him to avoid rallies and limit travel to a few vehicles. However, Rambabu expressed anger over the restrictions and proceeded with a convoy that later expanded significantly.
The convoy caused major traffic disruptions near the Kaza toll gate and other parts of Guntur district as party supporters gathered in large numbers to welcome him. Police officials repeatedly requested that vehicles be moved aside to ease traffic congestion, leading to verbal arguments between Rambabu and officers on duty. He reportedly warned officials during the confrontation, while traffic remained halted for nearly 20 minutes at certain junctions. Despite repeated appeals from police to maintain order, supporters removed barricades at one location, further worsening congestion. Rambabu later paid tribute at the Vangaveeti Ranga statue before reaching his residence, where party workers celebrated his arrival with fireworks.
