A major development has taken place in the ongoing Telangana political defection cases. The Telangana High Court has disqualified Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender from the Assembly. Nagender had won the 2023 Assembly election on a BRS ticket and later contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Secunderabad as a Congress candidate. The High Court treated his contesting the Lok Sabha election on a Congress ticket as a key factor in the defection case and declared the Khairatabad Assembly seat vacant.
Meanwhile, the legal proceedings concerning the other MLAs who were accused of switching from BRS to Congress are still continuing. Disqualification petitions had been filed against 10 MLAs, with the High Court now having ruled on Nagender’s case. Petitions challenging the Speaker’s decisions in the cases of the other nine MLAs remain pending before the High Court. The Speaker had earlier dismissed the petitions, holding that sufficient evidence of defection had not been established in those cases. The next legal developments will determine the status of the remaining MLAs.
