Team India is set to begin a five-match ODI series against New Zealand as part of its preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. With the tournament scheduled to be played on pace-friendly pitches, the conditions in New Zealand are expected to provide valuable preparation for the Indian players. After winning the T20I series, India, led by Shubman Gill, will look to carry that momentum into the 50-over format. The spotlight will be on senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who are expected to play crucial roles alongside Gill at the top of the order. Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul will be important in the middle overs, while all-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir and Axar Patel are expected to strengthen the team's balance. India's bowling, however, remains a concern, with Mohammed Siraj expected to lead the pace attack alongside Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar. Axar Patel and Naman Dhir could also play key roles in controlling the scoring during the middle overs.
New Zealand, meanwhile, are expected to offer a tough challenge with a strong batting and bowling line-up. Tim Seifert, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell impressed in the T20I series, while Will Young and Tom Latham add depth to the batting order. Mitchell Santner will be a key figure in the spin department, supported by pace bowlers Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Jacob Duffy and Nathan Smith. Henry's availability will depend on his fitness, with Blair Tickner likely to replace him if required. The pitch in Auckland is expected to offer assistance to both batters and bowlers, with pacers likely to make an impact; rain is not forecast to interrupt the match. New Zealand opener Devon Conway has been ruled out of the first ODI after suffering a concussion during a training session when he collided with pacer Matt Henry while attempting to take a catch. Tim Seifert has been brought into the squad as his replacement.
