The Tamil Nadu government has permitted cinema theatres across the state to screen newly released films up to six shows a day for the first seven days after their release. Under the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, theatres have traditionally been allowed to conduct four shows daily. After the TVK government assumed office, the limit was increased to five shows a day for newly released Tamil films during their first week. Five shows were also permitted on Saturdays, Sundays, local festival days and public holidays.
Seeking a further increase in the number of screenings, the Tamil Film Active Producers Association, the Tamil Film Producers Council and the Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association submitted requests to the government. Responding to their appeal, the state government has now approved six shows daily for the first seven days from a film's release. The screenings can be held between 6 am and 2:30 am the following day. The six-show permission will also apply to Saturdays, Sundays, local festivals and public holidays, providing theatres with greater flexibility to schedule screenings and audiences with more opportunities to watch new releases.
