Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has asserted that his government gives greater importance to people’s lives than to elections. Speaking during a review meeting on the Murasu cyclone situation, he said he believes electoral success will follow naturally if the government addresses people’s problems. He stated that the government’s primary objective is to ensure good governance and effectively implement development and welfare programmes. Chandrababu also announced that he would visit cyclone-affected areas on Wednesday to assess the situation on the ground. Clarifying concerns over the Budameru river, he said there was no threat and urged people not to panic or believe rumours.
The Chief Minister said the state was facing the combined challenges of Cyclone Arnab, Cyclone Murasu and the effects of El Niño, adding that such a situation could be unprecedented. He said the government was taking precautions to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and urged people to remain alert. Andhra Pradesh continues to face a 27 per cent rainfall deficit, he noted. The government is focusing on rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations. According to Chandrababu, power supply was disrupted in 4,095 villages due to the cyclones, while 548 substations were affected.
