Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Singur in West Bengal on Sunday and addressed a public rally, where he strongly criticised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). Calling upon the people to bring change in the state, he said that West Bengal would soon bid farewell to “Jungle Raj”. Modi stated that the BJP alone had given due honour to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose by installing his statue near India Gate and by recognising the Azad Hind Fauj near the Red Fort for the first time. He also recalled that an island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands had been named after Netaji.
The Prime Minister said that after the BJP came to power at the Centre, the Bengali language received classical language status, and Durga Puja was accorded the UNESCO World Heritage tag due to the efforts of the central government. He accused the TMC government of blocking the implementation of central welfare schemes in the state, causing hardship to the people. Highlighting the plight of fishermen, Modi said they were not receiving adequate support due to a lack of cooperation from the state government, which was preventing them from availing the benefits of central schemes. He urged the people of Bengal to teach the “cruel TMC government” a lesson and bring the BJP to power, asking whether they wanted a better future and a prosperous West Bengal.
