Polling stations opened across Bangladesh today as citizens began casting their votes in elections being held after several years of political instability. Voting commenced at 7:30 a.m. and will conclude at 4:30 p.m. According to Election Commission officials, vote counting will begin immediately after polling ends, with initial trends expected by midnight. Final results are likely to become clear by Friday morning (February 13).
These are the first elections to be held since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government in 2024. Since then, the country has been governed by an 18-month interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus. Approximately 127 million voters are expected to participate in this crucial electoral process to choose a new government.
Authorities have implemented extensive security arrangements nationwide. With concerns that nearly 50 percent of polling booths could witness potential clashes, heavy police deployment has been arranged. In the capital, Dhaka, police personnel have been deployed in large numbers, many equipped with body cameras. Officials also stated that around 90 percent of polling stations across the country are under CCTV surveillance to ensure transparency and maintain law and order.
