West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee clarified her controversial “ganda dharm” remark made during an Eid-ul-Fitr gathering in Kolkata, stating that her comments were aimed at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s alleged use of religion for political polarization and electoral gains. She emphasized that her statement was not directed at mainstream Hinduism or Sanatan Dharma, and reaffirmed her belief in inclusive and humanitarian values inspired by Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna Paramahansa.
However, the remark sparked sharp reactions from BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, who condemned the statement as an insult to Hindus and accused Banerjee of engaging in minority appeasement politics. The controversy escalated with public backlash and a police complaint filed in Siliguri, alleging that her comments hurt Hindu religious sentiments. The issue has intensified political tensions in the state.
