The Montha Cyclone, one of the most destructive storms to hit Andhra Pradesh in recent times, has left several districts battling severe losses. While the NDA government, led by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, was actively supervising relief and rehabilitation efforts across the state, former CM Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy was noticeably absent — staying put at his Bengaluru palace throughout the crisis.
Jagan reportedly returned to Andhra Pradesh only after the cyclone’s impact had subsided. Even then, his visit lasted just a couple of days, and he did not make any effort to personally meet the victims or assess the ground reality.
In contrast, Y.S. Sharmila, Jagan’s sister and the current AP Congress President, took a proactive step that drew widespread attention. Sharmila visited the cyclone-affected regions, met with farmers who lost their crops, and listened to their grievances firsthand. She urged the state government to provide immediate compensation and relief to the affected families.
Political observers have pointed out that Sharmila displayed leadership and empathy, qualities expected from an opposition figure during a calamity. Despite not holding any official power, she chose to stand with the people during their hardship.
Meanwhile, Jagan, who has been pushing for the recognition of his Leader of the Opposition status, limited his engagement to a virtual meeting with YSRCP leaders. This stark contrast has led to online discussions and memes, with many social media users commenting that Sharmila is proving to be a more responsible opposition leader than Jagan himself.
At a time when political leaders are expected to rise above party lines to comfort citizens in distress, Sharmila’s ground presence has earned her praise, while Jagan’s absence continues to raise questions about his commitment to the people of Andhra Pradesh.
