Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held a crucial telephone conversation on Monday, leading to a breakthrough in ongoing trade tensions between the two nations. Announcing the outcome, Trump said India and the United States have agreed on a major trade deal aimed at strengthening bilateral economic ties and easing long-standing tariff disputes.
As part of the agreement, the US will immediately reduce reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 18%, while India has agreed to lower duties and remove non-tariff barriers on American products. Trump also stated that India would stop purchasing crude oil from Russia and instead increase imports from the US and Venezuela amid the Russia–Ukraine conflict. Additionally, India has expressed willingness to procure nearly $500 billion worth of energy, technology, agricultural products, and coal from the United States. Calling Modi one of his “closest friends,” Trump said both leaders are “people who get things done".
