Andhra Pradesh IT and Industries Minister Nara Lokesh—already credited for transforming Vizag Stadium into a hub for IPL and international cricket—appears to be taking his sporting vision even further.
Earlier today, Lokesh visited the world-famous Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Australia and attended a detailed debriefing session on the stadium’s operations, infrastructure, and financial management.
During the visit, MCG officials and representatives from Cricket Victoria explained how Australia successfully operates world-class stadiums that function 365 days a year, generating consistent revenue beyond cricket events. Lokesh was reportedly impressed to learn that the MCG’s premises include multiple convention halls and banquet facilities, which remain booked throughout the year—even when no matches are being played.
The MCG precinct alone contributes over A$1.3 billion annually in tourism and taxes to the state of Victoria. Sharing his vision, Lokesh stated, “Our roadmap is to collaborate with Andhra Cricket, set up high-performance academies, and fast-track the Sports City project in Amaravati.”
Lokesh has formally invited the MCG management to partner with Andhra Cricket, and if this collaboration materializes, it could mark a major step in branding Amaravati as India’s premier Sports City.
It certainly looks like some big news is loading soon—and Andhra Pradesh’s sporting future might just be ready to make headlines on a global scale.
