In a major political development in Tamil Nadu, former BJP state president K. Annamalai has resigned from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party and announced plans to launch a new political movement. Explaining his decision, Annamalai said he had differences with the BJP leadership over the party’s future strategy in Tamil Nadu. He stated that despite holding several discussions with the central leadership over the past 18 months, no consensus could be reached. According to him, he had informed the leadership of his intention to step down as early as December 2025 but continued in the party to fulfill electoral responsibilities assigned to him.
Annamalai expressed gratitude to BJP leaders, particularly for the opportunities provided during his political journey, and reiterated his respect for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, he said it was appropriate to part ways due to strategic differences. Announcing his future plans, the former IPS officer revealed that he would launch a new political movement centered on “common-man politics” and provide an alternative to personality-driven politics in Tamil Nadu. He also disclosed that veteran actor Rajinikanth had invited him to work together, but indicated that he intends to pursue an independent political path. Annamalai said he plans to contest future elections independently and build a new political alternative in the state.
