A major xerox scam has come to light at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Kukatpally, where unauthorized individuals allegedly ran a xerox centre inside the university library for nearly 18 years, generating an illegal turnover of around ₹3 crore. Though permission was initially granted in 2008 to a private firm on a temporary basis, the firm later withdrew. Taking advantage of administrative lapses, unauthorized persons continued operations under the same name without the knowledge of senior university officials.
The scam surfaced after an outsourcing employee allegedly demanded ₹4 lakh to allow the business to continue, prompting intervention at the registrar level. Following the Vice-Chancellor’s orders, the xerox centre was sealed and a high-level committee headed by the university rector was constituted to conduct a detailed inquiry. Student organisations have alleged overcharging for xerox services, violating university-approved rates, and questioned the role of officials in allowing the irregularities to continue for years.
