The Government of Andhra Pradesh has announced a major restructuring of village panchayats to improve rural development. The reform aims to provide urban-level facilities in rural areas by classifying panchayats based on population and annual income. According to the government, panchayats with more than 10,000 residents or an annual income above ₹1 crore will be identified as ‘Rurban’ panchayats.
These panchayats will receive better infrastructure such as modern drainage systems, improved street lighting, and enhanced transport facilities. The government has also divided other panchayats into different grades to ensure better implementation of development programmes. The reform was introduced under the guidance of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to strengthen local governance and boost the rural economy across the state.
