OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has issued an apology, stating that although concerning online behavior by a teenager had been identified, the company failed to alert the relevant authorities in time. The teenager later carried out a mass shooting, resulting in the deaths of nine people and injuries to several others. Altman expressed deep regret over the tragic incident.
The shooting took place in February at a secondary school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada. According to reports, 18-year-old Van Rootsellar shot and killed her mother, stepbrother and six other students before later dying from gunshot wounds herself. Following the incident, Sam Altman wrote a letter addressed to the people of Tumbler Ridge. He stated that the teenager’s ChatGPT account had been suspended as early as last June after troubling online behavior was detected, but authorities were not notified at the time. He extended heartfelt apologies to the victims’ families and the local community for the immense loss caused by the tragedy.
