US Medicare Scam - Indian-Origin Lab Owner on the Run

An Indian-origin laboratory owner has been accused of allegedly defrauding the US Medicare program in a scheme involving hundreds of crores of rupees. According to US healthcare authorities, 46-year-old Khadir Khan Mohammed operated a genetic testing laboratory in Richardson, Texas. Between August 2023 and October 2024, applications were submitted for nearly $93 million in Medicare claims related to genetic tests across several parts of Texas, of which about $65 million, or roughly ₹620 crore, was claimed.

Authorities allege that the claims were submitted even though the genetic tests had not been ordered by doctors and the beneficiaries had not received treatment. Investigators also suspect that the personal information of doctors was misused to facilitate the alleged fraud. Following an investigation into Mohammed’s alleged role, Texas authorities filed charges against him and placed him on a fugitive list. He is currently suspected to be in Hyderabad.
