Water conservation has become increasingly important amid concerns over El Niño and the possibility of water shortages. With groundwater levels under pressure in many areas, rainwater harvesting and efficient water management are essential for long-term sustainability. Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad, began exploring a solution to this challenge around 15 years ago through a technique known as reverse boring. The method aims to channel rainwater into the ground, helping replenish underground water reserves instead of allowing valuable rainwater to flow away as runoff.
The reverse boring approach focuses on improving groundwater recharge by directing collected rainwater into suitable underground formations. If implemented with proper technical assessment, filtration and maintenance, such systems can help support groundwater levels and reduce dependence on other water sources. The initiative highlights the importance of adopting sustainable water-management practices, particularly during periods of irregular rainfall. Alongside rainwater harvesting, responsible water use and protection of existing water resources remain vital to addressing water scarcity.
