Field Marshal Asim Munir has been appointed as Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). The Shehbaz government has approved this appointment, and the Pakistan President’s Office has officially issued the notification. With this appointment, Asim Munir is set to become the most powerful person in Pakistan. He will serve in this position for five years.
As CDF, Munir will receive security privileges equal to the President in legal matters. Moreover, he cannot be prosecuted while holding this position.
Munir’s term as Pakistan Army Chief ended on November 29. To grant him additional powers, the coalition government recently made a decision to create the Chief of Defence Forces post. Before announcing Munir as CDF, several speculations circulated regarding the appointment. National media reports suggested that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was delaying the appointment. It was speculated that differences between the government and the military were the reason for this delay.
