The Railway Ministry has introduced a new reform aimed at improving cleanliness in trains. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that both reserved and general coaches will now be cleaned at regular intervals during the journey. He shared the details while speaking to the media at Rail Bhavan in New Delhi.
In the first phase, the initiative will be implemented in 80 trains across the country, including five trains under the South Central Railway zone. After six months, the facility will be extended to another 80 trains. Over the next three years, the plan is to gradually cover general coaches in all trains nationwide.
During peak travel hours, cleaning will be carried out every hour, while in less crowded periods it will take place every one and a half hours. The minister clarified that no additional charges will be imposed on passengers for this service.
Each train will have a dedicated professional cleaning team. Control rooms will also be set up to monitor cleanliness standards using artificial intelligence by reviewing images from the trains.
The supply of pillows and blankets, along with minor repair works, will be handled by a single contractor. Cleaning staff will receive proper training and certification. Supervisors overseeing the operations must have at least a Class 12 qualification or an ITI certification.
