Hotels in Chennai have reportedly started adding an extra “gas charge” to customer bills due to the shortage of commercial cooking gas. The situation is said to be linked to tensions and conflict in the Middle East, which have disrupted crude oil supply chains and affected fuel availability. As governments prioritise domestic cooking gas distribution, supplies for restaurants and hotels have reportedly decreased, forcing many businesses to face operational challenges.
Several eateries in the city are allegedly charging an additional ₹10 per bill as a gas fee. At the same time, food prices have also increased significantly, with items such as dosa and idli becoming much more expensive in some places. Consumers, already struggling with rising food costs, have expressed anger and filed complaints with authorities. Hotel owners, however, claim that the shortage has forced them to purchase commercial gas cylinders from the black market at prices ranging between ₹5,000 and ₹6,000, and that the extra charge is necessary to cover the increased cost.
