The Government of India has appointed former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi as the new High Commissioner to Bangladesh. The Ministry of External Affairs officially announced this development. Trivedi is set to assume charge, succeeding Pranay Verma, who is slated to proceed as India's Ambassador to the European Union. Officials stated that he is expected to take up his new assignment shortly.
This appointment assumes particular significance against the backdrop of certain tensions that have recently emerged between India and Bangladesh. It appears that the government has taken this decision with the objective of further strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.
Dinesh Trivedi is a leader with extensive political experience. Having commenced his political career with the Congress party in the 1980s, he subsequently served in the Janata Dal and the Trinamool Congress before joining the BJP in 2021. At the Centre, he served as the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, in addition to discharging his duties as the Minister of Railways. He also played a pivotal role as a member of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
