Reports suggest that the Central Government is currently examining a proposal to levy a tax of Rs 1 per GB on mobile data consumption. It appears that this idea has been put forward with the dual objective of generating additional revenue amidst rising digital usage, and curbing the growing digital habits among the youth.
According to current estimates, approximately 229 billion GBs of data consumption were recorded nationwide during the 2024-25 financial year. Based on these figures, it is estimated that implementing a tax of Rs 1 per GB could potentially generate an annual revenue of up to Rs 22,900 crore.
The Department of Telecommunications has been tasked with conducting a feasibility study on this proposal. A comprehensive report on this matter is expected to be submitted by September 2026. However, officials have clarified that no final decision regarding the implementation of this tax has been taken thus far.
