Planned ceasefire talks in Islamabad failed to materialize, even as tensions surged following an incident in the Strait of Hormuz. According to reports, Iran opened fire on a container vessel, further escalating the already fragile situation. Amid this, Donald Trump announced an extension of the ceasefire while awaiting a unified proposal from Tehran. The development reportedly occurred just hours after Trump’s announcement.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was said to be behind the firing incident, as confirmed by UK Maritime Trade Operations, which noted that no prior warning was issued to the vessel. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. Meanwhile, Iran acknowledged the attack but did not disclose the reasons. Tensions have further intensified following recent actions involving Iranian commercial vessels. Iran’s UN envoy Amir Saeid Iravani stated that Tehran is open to a second round of talks with the US, provided sanctions and blockades on its ships are lifted, signaling conditional willingness for diplomatic engagement.
