The central government has initiated strict action over the massive disruptions in IndiGo’s flight operations in recent days. The DGCA issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers, questioning the lack of planning and supervision that led to nationwide chaos for passengers. The notice directs him to explain why action should not be taken and to respond within 24 hours. Meanwhile, Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu met with the IndiGo CEO and senior officials to review the situation. The minister instructed the airline to restore normal operations immediately and ensure prompt refunds and assistance to affected passengers. A four-member DGCA inquiry committee has also been formed to investigate the root cause and recommend corrective measures.
Due to staff shortages, IndiGo had been cancelling flights on an unprecedented scale. On Friday alone, 1,600 flights were cancelled, followed by 800 cancellations on Saturday, leaving thousands of passengers stranded across the country. The Ministry of Civil Aviation later announced that conditions at major airports have returned to normal, with check-in and check-out processes running smoothly. However, it may still take some time before IndiGo’s services fully stabilize.
