Dulquer Salmaan’s upcoming bilingual film Kaantha, directed by Selvamani Selvaraj and co-starring Rana Daggubati, Samuthirakani, and Bhagyashri Borse, is now facing legal hurdles just days before its release. The film, jointly produced by Wayfarer Films and Spirit Media, was one of the most anticipated releases of the month. However, a petition filed by B. Thiagarajan, the grandson of legendary Tamil actor-singer M.K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, has sought to halt the film’s release. He claims the story misrepresents his grandfather’s life and reputation, portraying him as a morally flawed man who died in debt — an allegation the family has denied.
Responding to the controversy, Dulquer clarified that Kaantha is purely a fictional crime drama and not a biopic. He stated that the film takes creative inspiration from several classic personalities but does not depict any real-life individual directly. Meanwhile, the Chennai Civil Court has issued notices to Dulquer and the production houses, asking for a response by November 18. With the case pending, uncertainty looms over Kaantha’s scheduled release on November 14.
