Police were conducting a naka checking operation in the Songsak area at around 4 a.m. when four men who arrived at the spot allegedly opened fire at them. The police retaliated, leading to an exchange of fire in which all four attackers were seriously injured and later died. Authorities are in the process of confirming their identities based on the details found with the deceased. Police also suspect that the four may have links to an incident reported in the Tapra area across the state border on August 25.
East Garo Hills SP Swapnil Pawar said the immediate priority was to confirm the identities of the deceased before examining their criminal backgrounds. Investigators will also check whether they were linked to any previously registered cases. Police are collecting evidence to determine how the firing began, how the suspects obtained weapons and what led them to open fire at the personnel during the naka checking operation.
