NASA’s Roman Space Telescope Launches Successfully

NASA achieved another major milestone in space exploration with the successful launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. The observatory lifted off aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on August 30, 2026, at 7:26 a.m. EDT, which was 4:56 p.m. IST. Roman will study dark energy, dark matter and exoplanets, and has a field of view at least 100 times larger than Hubble’s, allowing it to survey vast areas of the sky.

The telescope is designed to investigate how the universe is expanding, study the distribution of galaxies and matter, and search for planets beyond our solar system. NASA says Roman will map billions of galaxies and carry out wide-ranging surveys of the cosmos, including exoplanet searches using techniques such as gravitational microlensing. Following launch, the observatory will spend about three months travelling nearly one million miles to the Sun-Earth L2 region, where it will begin preparations for its scientific mission.
