Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for healthy teeth and gums. When harmful bacteria accumulate in the mouth, they can contribute to plaque formation, tooth decay, gum problems and bad breath. Along with regular brushing and flossing, a balanced diet can also support dental health. Researchers from the University of Illinois Chicago have explored the potential benefits of pure cranberry juice in controlling harmful oral bacteria.
Cranberries contain natural compounds called proanthocyanidins, which may interfere with the ability of certain bacteria to attach to surfaces. In the reported research, rinsing with pure cranberry juice was associated with a 44% reduction in plaque bacteria among adults and a 33% reduction among children. Researchers also suggested that these compounds may help reduce bacterial activity linked to acid production and tooth decay. However, the findings require further investigation. If considering cranberry juice, choose an unsweetened variety, as added sugar can contribute to tooth decay. Continue brushing twice daily, flossing regularly and visiting a dentist for routine check-ups.
