Are you bored of preparing the same chicken curries every time? Chana dal chicken curry is a delicious alternative worth trying. This flavourful dish combines tender chicken, soaked Bengal gram and a blend of aromatic spices to create a rich and distinctive taste. To prepare it, you will need 500 grams of chicken, half a cup of raw chana dal, two large onions, four green chillies, oil, salt, red chilli powder, turmeric and coriander leaves. The special masala requires coriander seeds, cumin seeds, ginger, garlic, coconut, cashews, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. First, wash the chana dal thoroughly and soak it for 30 minutes to an hour. Marinate the cleaned chicken with salt, chilli powder and turmeric. Meanwhile, grind the remaining masala ingredients into a smooth paste using a mixer.
To prepare the curry, heat oil in a pan and sauté the chopped onions and green chillies until golden brown. Add the marinated chicken and fry for a few minutes. Next, add the soaked chana dal and mix well. Add the prepared masala paste along with salt and cook covered over a medium flame. After five minutes, add red chilli powder and sauté until its raw smell disappears. Pour in a glass of water, cover the pan and cook until the chicken and dal become tender. Finally, simmer the curry until the gravy reaches the desired consistency. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and switch off the stove. The delicious chana dal chicken curry is now ready to serve. It pairs well with rice, roti, chapati, dosa and idli.
