A tragic incident unfolded in the United States as a B-52 Stratofortress bomber belonging to the US Air Force crashed shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert, Southern California. The aircraft, which took off at around 11:20 AM local time on a routine test mission, lost control moments later and crashed, triggering a massive explosion and fire. Emergency response teams rushed to the site and initiated rescue operations, but the aircraft was completely destroyed in the blaze. Eight people lost their lives in the accident, marking a significant loss for the US military.
James Hayes, Deputy Commander of the 412th Test Wing at Edwards Air Force Base, confirmed the fatalities and stated that the victims included both military personnel and government contractors. The aircraft was reportedly undergoing radar modernization testing at the time. Preliminary assessments suggest that possible causes of the crash could include control system malfunction, engine failure, or faults in the equipment being tested. In a separate incident, a Russian Tu-22M3 bomber crashed near Kamyenka village in Irkutsk, Siberia, during a training mission. All four crew members safely ejected, and engine failure is suspected to be the cause.
