A US Navy MH-60S Seahawk helicopter made an emergency landing in the Arabian Sea while on patrol, with one crew member reported missing. The incident has been officially confirmed by the United States Fifth Fleet. In a statement, the Navy said that search and rescue operations are currently underway to locate the missing aircrew member. An investigation has also been launched to determine the cause of the emergency landing. The helicopter was deployed from the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush operating in the region.
Emergency landings on water are considered extremely risky, even for highly trained pilots. Due to the top-heavy structure of helicopters, there is a significant risk of capsizing upon contact with water. In a related development, a US Apache helicopter crashed near the Strait of Hormuz in June, though both pilots survived. At the same time, Iran claimed it had shot down a US drone in the region, raising concerns and speculation over ongoing tensions and security challenges in these strategic waters.
