IIT Kanpur RTI Data Sparks Debate Over Faculty Representation

An RTI response from IIT Kanpur has sparked a debate over social representation among faculty members at one of India’s premier engineering institutions. According to the response, the institute has 257 professors, including 252 from the General category and three from the OBC category. No SC or ST faculty members are listed at the professor rank.

The RTI response also revealed that IIT Kanpur has a sanctioned faculty strength of 957, but only 581 positions are currently filled, leaving 376 vacancies. The All India OBC Students Association (AIOBCSA) highlighted the figures and raised questions about representation in faculty recruitment.
