US Sanctions Bill Raises Tariff Concerns for India.. Centre Issues Response

The US House of Representatives has passed the “Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026”, a legislation that gives President Donald Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that continue buying Russian oil and gas. India and China, among the major buyers of Russian energy, could potentially face higher tariffs if the provisions are implemented. The bill has now been sent to Trump for his consideration and signature.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said New Delhi is closely monitoring the legislation and remains committed to ensuring energy security for its 1.4 billion people. The government said it will continue sourcing energy from diverse suppliers depending on market conditions and has already discussed the issue with US representatives. India has also conveyed that the legislation could have implications not only for bilateral relations but also for the stability of international energy markets. New Delhi said it would take all necessary steps to safeguard the country’s trade and economic interests and work with relevant stakeholders to address any impact arising from the legislation.
