India will look to finish the T20I series against New Zealand with a victory when the two teams meet in the fifth and final match in Hamilton on Sunday. Despite winning the first three matches and sealing the series, India suffered a heavy 87-run defeat in the fourth T20I. New Zealand posted 259 runs, their highest-ever total in T20 internationals, before restricting India to a disappointing performance. The hosts will now aim to carry their momentum into the final game and build confidence ahead of the upcoming ODI series. India, meanwhile, will be keen to bounce back and reaffirm their dominance. One of the key talking points is whether young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi will return to the playing XI after being left out of the previous match following Ishan Kishan’s recovery from injury. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma opened in the fourth game, but the move did not produce the desired result.
India’s batting line-up will also be under pressure to deliver, particularly captain Shreyas Iyer, who has faced criticism over his recent form. Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Naman Dhir have been among the positive performers for India. The bowling attack, however, will need to improve after conceding 259 runs in the previous match. Glenn Phillips smashed a destructive century, while New Zealand’s other batters, including Michael Bracewell, Finn Allen, Daryl Mitchell and Bevon Jacobs, have also shown good form. Mitchell Santner and Jacob Duffy have troubled Indian batters with the ball. India could consider resting Nitish Kumar Reddy after his expensive spell in the fourth match and bringing Shivam Dube into the side. The Hamilton pitch is expected to favour batters, with short boundaries likely to produce another high-scoring contest. There is no significant threat of rain. Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma leads the list of six-hitters in T20 cricket this year with 129 sixes, ahead of Finn Allen’s 111. Phillips, currently on 276 runs in the series, needs 15 more to set a new New Zealand record for the most runs by a batter in a bilateral T20I series.
