India’s women’s team emerged as champions of the inaugural Commonwealth Kabaddi Championship with a convincing 35-15 victory over Uganda in the final in Ahmedabad on Saturday. Led by captain Nidhi Sharma, the Indian side completed an unbeaten campaign, winning all six matches to claim the title. Sakshi led the scoring in the final with nine raid points, while Anu contributed six and Nidhi Sharma added five. Defenders Ritu and Suman played a key role with four tackle points each.
India took control of the final with a 22-7 lead at half-time, scoring an All-Out along the way. Uganda put up a stronger fight after the break, but India secured another All-Out to seal the victory. Sakshi finished the championship with 52 points from six matches and was India’s standout performer in the final. She said the gold-medal victory was a proud moment for the team and added that international tournaments would help the sport grow and give young players valuable experience. India had earlier defeated Malaysia, Singapore, Uganda and Nigeria in the group stage before overcoming Sri Lanka in the semi-final.
