Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that unity is the driving force behind India's progress. He credited Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel with bringing the country together and strengthening its security, adding that India continues to follow the path shown by the great leader. Modi made these remarks while addressing the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat on the occasion of Patel's birth anniversary. He criticised the opposition for indulging in divisive politics and urged people to unitedly defeat attempts by forces seeking to destabilise the country.
Modi criticised previous governments for limiting their efforts to the slogan of 'Garibi Hatao'. He said poverty had declined significantly over the past 12 years under his government's initiatives, falling below three per cent. He also referred to a recent World Bank report highlighting India's progress in poverty reduction. The Prime Minister said the country had overcome Naxalite violence but alleged that 'intellectual Naxals' were attempting to create unrest. He asserted that such forces could not succeed if people remained united. Emphasising that nobody could stop India's development, he called for embracing the vision of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat' and achieving the goal of a developed India by 2047.
