Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the public impeachment initiative was aimed at holding accountable those allegedly conspiring to steal votes. Supporting the impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, he demanded that a case be registered against the poll chief and that the allegations be examined by a court. Gandhi said it was unusual that opposition leaders had to sit on a lawn to discuss the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner. He added that the opposition had been left with no other option but to organise a mock Parliament after being denied opportunities to raise the issue through institutional forums.
Referring to the meeting held at the residence of Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, Gandhi said it was unprecedented for MPs from both Houses and ordinary citizens to gather to discuss the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner. He described the initiative as a political instrument and asserted that Gyanesh Kumar would not be able to evade accountability, claiming that the opposition had sufficient evidence against him. Gandhi also criticised the central government, alleging attempts to manipulate elections and misuse investigative agencies such as the CBI and ED. He said such actions would only be temporary and warned that the country's youth would not forgive the government.
