The Supreme Court has made significant observations regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence in legal proceedings. It stated that unverified AI-generated information could undermine the integrity of the judicial system and emphasized the need for strict regulation. The court directed the Bar Council of India to form a committee to examine the use of AI in judicial processes.
While hearing the Essel Infra Projects insolvency case, a bench comprising Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe strongly criticized an NCLT order. The bench found that the judgment cited fake and non-existent precedents, likely generated using AI tools. Terming such fabricated content as highly detrimental to justice, the Supreme Court set aside the NCLT order and advised courts to act strictly against unverified AI-based rulings.
