UP Government Announces Strict Action Against Adulterated Dairy Products

1. The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a major decision to protect public health by ordering strict action against companies involved in adulterating milk and dairy products. Authorities will shut down such establishments and cancel their licenses. The Yogi Adityanath government has decided to introduce additional stringent measures beyond the recent directions issued by the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) regarding food quality standards.

2. Previously, when cases of adulteration were detected, samples were collected from the concerned establishments and sent for testing, followed by the registration of cases. Under the new measures, if there are allegations that milk or dairy products contain harmful or prohibited substances, operations at the concerned manufacturing unit will be immediately suspended under Section 34 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The establishments will not be allowed to resume operations until further orders, and all dairy products at the premises will be seized.

If adulteration or the presence of harmful substances is confirmed, the license of the company found violating the regulations will be cancelled. A statewide ban will also be imposed on the sale of products manufactured under the concerned brand.Food Safety Commissioner Dr. Roshan Jacob stressed that the sale of milk and the quality of dairy products must strictly comply with prescribed safety standards.

Recent inspections have reportedly detected prohibited substances in milk and dairy products at several locations, including refined oil, fat, talcum powder, detergent, titanium dioxide, and hydrogen peroxide. Against this backdrop, the Yogi government has decided to take stringent measures to safeguard public health.
