Legendary Mountaineer Nirmal Purja's Body Recovered After Broad Peak Avalanche

The body of legendary mountaineer Nirmal "Nims" Purja was recovered following a massive avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram range. The avalanche struck on July 30 between Camp 2 and Camp 3 at an altitude of 8,051 metres, sweeping away all 10 members of an international expedition led by Purja.

Rescue teams carried out extensive search operations despite extreme weather and dangerous terrain. Along with Purja, the bodies of several other climbers, including Wang Zhong from China, Nima Sherpa, Kili Pemba Sherpa, Nathira Ahmed, Mallory Geis and Bahadur Gurung, have also been recovered. Search efforts continue for the remaining missing climbers.

Purja, 43, was considered one of the greatest mountaineers in the world. In 2019, he created history by climbing all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres in just 189 days, a record-breaking achievement featured in Netflix's documentary "14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible." He also contributed to the first successful winter ascent of K2 in 2021.
