The Government of India is introducing an important change to the widely used WhatsApp Web service. Millions of users, especially those who depend on WhatsApp Web for office work and long chat sessions, are expected to be affected by this update. According to the new Indian regulations, WhatsApp Web will now automatically log out every six hours.
WhatsApp Web works by being connected to the active SIM in the user’s mobile phone. Under the new rule, the platform will not allow a continuous session beyond six hours without re-authentication. Currently, once a device is linked, WhatsApp Web stays active for several days as long as the phone remains online. However, with the new change, users must scan the QR code again every six hours to continue using the service. This may cause inconvenience to users who rely on WhatsApp Web throughout the day.
The government states that the primary objective of this rule is to reduce cyber fraud and financial crimes occurring across the country. Criminals often misuse messaging platforms without a valid SIM or from foreign locations. To prevent this, the government has made SIM binding mandatory so that every activity on messaging apps can be linked to a verified physical SIM subscriber. Although this rule may cause some inconvenience, authorities believe it will significantly help in preventing fraud.
The government has given companies 90 days to comply with these new regulations. The change is part of the ‘Telecommunication Cyber Security Amendment Rules, 2025’ issued by the Department of Telecommunications. As per these rules, messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram must be linked to an active SIM card. The mobile number used for registering the WhatsApp account must be associated with an active SIM in the same device. Without a valid SIM, the app will not function.
