As Telugu cinema expands beyond the pan-India market and targets international audiences, opportunities for foreign actors are also increasing. While filmmakers earlier largely brought villains from Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam industries, Tollywood is now showing greater interest in Hollywood talent. SS Rajamouli helped establish this trend by casting international actors such as Ray Stevenson and Alison Doody in key roles in RRR. Now, Hollywood actor Arnold Vosloo is reportedly set to appear in a role with negative shades in Vijay Deverakonda’s upcoming film Ranabali. Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, the film is reportedly set against the backdrop of British rule in Rayalaseema between 1854 and 1878, which has prompted the makers to explore foreign actors who suit the story.
There was also reportedly an attempt to bring Korean actor Don Lee on board for Spirit, but the plan did not move forward as the makers could not find a suitable role. Meanwhile, reports suggest that Atlee has approached Hollywood star Will Smith for the villain’s role in Raka. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding this development so far. Whether Will Smith will actually be part of the Allu Arjun-Atlee project or whether the reports are simply linked to the film’s international market strategy remains unclear. More clarity could emerge through the film’s promotions, teaser or trailer.
