Sony Group has reportedly developed a new technology capable of identifying original music used in artificial intelligence (AI)-generated songs. The system is designed to detect copyrighted material embedded in AI-created tracks and help rights holders determine whether their work has been used without permission. According to a report by Nikkei Asia, the technology can identify the original songs that inspired an AI-generated track, detect multiple music sources, and even estimate the percentage of content used in the final output.
The technology reportedly works in two ways — by directly analysing training data from AI developers who cooperate or by comparing AI-generated songs with existing music catalogues when developers do not share data. The innovation was led by Sony AI, the research and development arm of Sony, and its related academic work has reportedly undergone peer review. The company aims to use this tool to ensure fairer revenue distribution to original songwriters and address growing concerns over transparency and copyright issues in AI-generated music.
