This Shirt Can Fool AI Cameras?

German designer Simon Weckert has designed a distinctive “digital camouflage” shirt aimed at confusing AI-powered video surveillance systems. The experiment comes amid plans to deploy AI cameras in public spaces in Berlin and other German cities to monitor activities. In footage shared by Weckert, the AI camera reportedly detected several people walking on the street as “persons”, while failing to identify the individual wearing the specially designed shirt. The experiment was intended to examine how reliably AI-based surveillance systems can recognise people in real-world environments.

AI vision systems are trained on large collections of images to identify people using visual cues such as body shape, colours, clothing and outlines. Weckert’s shirt uses bright colour variations and overlapping shapes that can disrupt the system’s ability to determine a clear human silhouette. The designer said AI was also used in developing the design and that his aim was to expose limitations in computer-vision technology. He noted that the experiment demonstrates how differently humans and AI systems can interpret the same visual information. “Digital camouflage” is also a broader design concept in which patterns are created to make objects or people less distinguishable from certain distances or under specific viewing conditions.
