

Artificial intelligence is steadily becoming an important part of agricultural decision-making in India, complementing traditional farming knowledge with precise, data-driven insights. Google DeepMind’s AnthroKrishi team has developed AI models that use satellite imagery to map agricultural fields and monitor crop activity. One model identifies fields, trees and water bodies using historical satellite data, while another tracks sowing and harvesting stages across 12 crops, with updates designed to provide near-real-time information during the agricultural season.
The technology could help address several challenges faced by Indian farmers, including unpredictable weather, climate change, rising input costs, water constraints and crop risks. The AI-generated agricultural data is also being used through partnerships and digital agriculture initiatives in states such as Telangana and Karnataka. Experts stress that the objective is not to replace traditional farming practices or farmers, but to provide reliable information for better decision-making. Despite challenges involving data quality, technological awareness and adoption, India’s growing digital infrastructure could help the country accelerate the use of AI in agriculture.
