When Apple and Google announced their partnership, making Google the AI provider for Siri and some Apple Intelligence features, it raised questions about data privacy, technology implementation, and OpenAI’s role. Apple already works with OpenAI for handling complex Siri queries.
According to a Financial Times report, OpenAI chose not to become Apple’s custom AI model provider. Instead, it is focusing on developing its own AI-powered devices, designed by ex-Apple designer Jony Ive. This aligns with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s recent directive to pause non-ChatGPT projects.
Reports suggest OpenAI and Ive’s lineup could include up to three devices: an AI pen, a wearable, and a speaker, potentially launching within the next two years. FT also noted that Apple’s AI strategy is not about leading the market but leveraging its distribution network to partner with AI companies. With its in-house silicon, Private Cloud Compute, AI server chip, and data centers, Apple can outsource core AI technology while acting as a “kingmaker” in the AI space.
