WhatsApp Rolls Out New Security Features

WhatsApp is strengthening account security with a series of new updates aimed at protecting users from hacking, phishing and scams. The Meta-owned messaging platform has enhanced its existing two-step verification feature, allowing users to replace the traditional six-digit verification PIN with an alphanumeric password. The stronger password option is designed to make accounts more difficult for attackers to compromise, even if they manage to obtain a user’s one-time password.

WhatsApp has also expanded passkey support for Android and iOS users, allowing more than one passkey to be linked to an account. Passkeys let users sign in using their fingerprint, Face ID or device screen lock instead of relying on traditional passwords. Additionally, Android users receiving calls from unknown numbers can now get more context, including whether the number is registered in another country and whether the caller shares any WhatsApp groups with them. The features are aimed at helping users identify potentially suspicious calls and avoid scams.
